The mangrove project team from the Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) of DLSU Manila attended a two day mangrove learning session sponsored by BALAYAN of the University of St La Salle (USLS). No less than Dr. Jurgenne Primavera, PEW Fellow, Scientist Emerita from SEAFDEC and named Hero for the Environment by Time Magazine in 2008 provided valuable input in mangrove ecology, rehabilitation and conservation process and legal issues on the reversion of abandoned fishponds to mangrove forest. The two day session consisted of morning lectures and afternoon fieldworks in selected mangrove rehabilitation sites in Silay and Bacolod.
The activity was originally intended for members of BALAYAN’s partner peoples’ organizations as well as local government units who are into mangrove rehabilitation work.
Aside from Dr Primavera’s on-going advocacy on appropriate mangrove reforestation activities, she also provided input on eco-tourism and how the mangrove ecosystem can enhance such endeavors.
Dr Primavera is scheduled to provide Luzon based OMT representatives a mangrove learning session on 21 Sept 2009 at DLSU Manila. For seat reservations and other inquiries, contact Ms. Bhea Torriana, COSCA Community Engagement Administrative Officer at 525-4267.
